Although the importance of these factors had been explored previously by political philosophers and historians, Madison thought that no one had yet given adequate consideration to the interaction between each of these variables and the formation of public opinion or to the extraordinary political benefits that might be accrued if one did. He thus embarked on a research project to correct the errors and advance the analysis of former thinkers and to present a markedly new way of thinking about republicanism and the politics of public opinion.
