It is no less important to pay attention to technology than it is to pay attention to rhetoric, because both, as forms of interface, have the potential to change us at least as much as we change them. Most important, perhaps, is that we begin to ask the kinds of questions, as a discipline, that some of our colleagues will be asking over the next few days. As important as technological innovation was to McLuhan's thought, equally necessary was the social maturity to interrogate technology: "There is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening" (25).
