The Problem oJ Art-Languages 23 So long as we remember thatform and content are terms belonging to different areas of discourse, and that our critical metalanguage allows us to refer to a work's content as above defined, but not, except by pointing, to its form, we are safe. The fallacy is to regard form and content as differentiable entities causally related within the text, rather than as simply different ways of talking about the same thing, and therefore as indicating separate areas of discourse, the language and the meta-Ianguage.

There have been many riders and qualifications to, and outright dissensions from, such an approach. But the wealth and prestige of those schools acknowledging the primacy of the facts of the text, the words on the page, are so great they still dominate critical procedure.
