Nick BROOMFIELD Nick Broomfield is one of a new generation of film-makers who have transformed audience expectations of the documentary form. Whereas documentarists once sought objectivity, Broomfield openly takes sides. His confrontational approach often uses humour to engage and entertain the viewer and he is frequently drawn to controversial subject matter.

Away from Ealing, he made three other British feature films. Although The First Gentleman (1948) and For Them That Trespass (1948) are relatively unremarkable, They Made Me a Fugitive (1947) was a landmark film. It helped to establish the popular, although critically derided, cycle of lurid postwar crime films, but has considerable artistic merit too.
